Exploring Tuscany's Lost Corner
Imagine our delight when we opened the New York Times Sunday travel section on May 21, 2005 to see our little corner of Tuscany described in the feature story. Every thing we did during our very first vacation to Italy was right there, described in an experienced travelers travelogue of what he did to create a unique adventure in Italy. The walks in the mountains. The lovely little hill towns. The food and wine. The buildings. The potential impact on our recent real estate investment! I know the headline said "lost corner," but I read it as "undiscovered" -- the muse to a New York traveler's ears and the opportunity -- for at least a tiny moment, to gloat over our purchase. "Yes, yes, we bought back when, before it was discovered by the New York Times!"
Take the half hour or so drive from the Apuan Alps' foothills town of Petrognano up the Serchio River Valley to Bagni di Lucca and walk the Devil's Bridge. Take in the breeze and the breathtaking views from Barga -- the Scott's Italian home. Park that car in Castlenuovo di Garfagnana and take off into the parks and trails. Or if you want, just drive down into the valley to Lucca. Walk the wall. Visit the museums. Find great music. Shop. Eat. Take in the Lucchesi view of the Apuan Alps. Then drive back to your home in Petrognano for a view to die for and a cool, solid night's rest, 'caus it's the train into the heart of Florence tomorrow.
